Check the purchase date. This replacement wheel for Veritas standard wheel marking gauge purchased prior to September 2004 fits only the earlier fitting; gauges bought after that date use a different wheel instead.
It won't seat correctly. The pre-2004 and current-production Veritas gauges use different wheel-cutter fittings, so the wrong wheel will not mount securely even though the two gauges look similar.
The hardened-steel wheel slices through wood fibers rather than tearing them, so the line stays crisp even across the grain, which is where a pin-style gauge tends to struggle.
