Originally developed for barge builders on the Thames River, these chisels are still popular for rugged use.
The blades (4 1/2" to 7" long) are rectangular in cross section and taper 1/16" from the shoulder to the bevel. The heavy hardwood handles (6 1/2" long) have steel hoops top and bottom and a thick leather shock washer next to the bolster.

It has a rectangular cross-section instead of a bevelled one, giving the blade extra body through its length so it can stand up to heavy mallet blows without flexing the way a thinner bevel-edge blade would.
A thick leather shock washer sits next to the bolster, and steel hoops reinforce the top and bottom of the handle to absorb repeated striking without splitting.
Size depends on the width of mortise you're cutting: the range runs from 1/4" up to 2", or you can buy the complete set of seven if your projects call for a variety of mortise widths.
